American Royal World Series of Barbecue Moves to Labor Day Weekend

The American Royal’s World Series of Barbecue competition is moving to Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 3) at the Kansas Speedway.

Organizers chose the holiday weekend in hopes that it will attract more barbecue fans, and in belief that the hundreds of elite competition teams that attend will be at the top of their game.

The date change is one of few changes that have been made to the iconic contest in recent years. In 2015, the World Series of Barbecue moved from the West Bottoms to Arrowhead Stadium. In 2016, it was held the last weekend in October and again moved, this time to the Kansas Speedway.

Other changes to the iconic event include the addition of more public activities, barbecue and local food, a vendor fair and a full lineup of children’s activities.

Tickets go on sale in October, at the beginning of the 2017 American Royal season.
