For 25-plus years, more than 200 homeowners have adorned their properties in this Olathe subdivision with Christmas lights and giant-size holiday cards to create what is known as Christmas Card Lane. The entire subdivision gets into the holiday spirit and even welcomes an occasional visit from Old Saint Nick. When you pull your car into the Mission Ridge subdivision, turn off your headlights and drive slowly to completely enjoy house after house of holiday magic. Don’t be surprised if you hear the happy notes of carolers.
Directions: Take 151st St. to Ridgeview Rd. Head north on Ridgeview into the Mission Ridge Subdivision and enter Christmas Card Lane by going west on Butterfield Place.
The Ultimate Holiday Tree
(Deer Creek Home), Overland Park
Mark Callegari’s holiday-dressed Deer Creek home was featured on “HGTV’s All Out Christmas,” a show that highlights the most elaborate holiday home decorations in the nation. The centerpiece of Callegari’s display is a tree-shaped flat-panel lighting display made of thousands of solid-state LED bulbs. It is a spectacular sight to behold with the home’s multi-colored LED lighting enveloping the front of the home along with an 8-foot twinkling wreath. This technological marvel is best viewed along with the coordinated tunes on 98.5 FM.

From Metcalf Ave., turn east onto W. 133rd St. At the traffic circle take the 3rd exit onto Lamar Avenue, continue to W. 131st Street.
Paulie’s Penguin Playground,
Paul Craig and family have been hosting Paulie’s Penguin Playground for eight seasons, each year adding more elements of holiday decor including the signature penguins. It is estimated the collection includes 150 or more lighted figures in a variety of configurations entirely filling the front yard of the Craig home. Some say it is the single largest private display in all of Johnson County, if not the entire Kansas City area.
Don’t be shy at this holiday display. Take a moment to get out of your car and visit the Craig Penguin Playground, which features a snow-making machine. There is no admission but donations are welcome and benefit the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

131st Place just west of Antioch Road is an enchanted place this time of year. More than 20 homeowners coordinate a magical holiday setting that engulfs you as you turn off of Antioch and onto the streets of this tiny subdivision, which features lit candy canes and similarly decked-out trees. The uniformity of design and unanimous participation of the neighborhood suggest you’ve entered a magical Christmas Forest.
