Inside the Closet of Erin Thompson
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU?
I generally try to get up and work out first thing. If nothing else, I take my puppies for a walk. Then I work my day job as a lawyer. In the evening, I work on getting more women involved in politics and elected to office in Kansas through Kansans Advancing Women, a group I founded. Or I volunteer with Junior League or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I try to squeeze in some time for good food and wine or a visit to one of the great local museums with friends.
WHAT’S YOUR STYLE PERSONALITY?
I’m kind of a strange amalgam of tomboy, boho hippy chic and traditional prepster. I think it’s the result of a combination of growing up playing soccer and having a boho hippy mother who always took me to shop at Talbots growing up. I try to mix high-end with low-end and am always looking for great vintage pieces.
WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP?
I’m kind of a slave to J.Crew. If Jenna Lyons tells me it’s cool, I’m in. Standard Style always has a great collection, as does Halls. I also have an embarrassingly large number of pieces from Target. I do love what Target is doing with its boutiques and making designer names accessible to a larger audience. I love to hunt eBay for vintage purses. The stores that open the first weekends in the West Bottoms can yield some great jewelry and vintage finds as well.
HOW HAVE YOU ORGANIZED YOUR CLOSET AND WHAT PERSONAL TOUCHES HAVE YOU INCORPORATED?
I was tired of digging through the bottom of my closet for shoes and never being able to find the purse I wanted. So when I bought my own house I thought, “Why not turn my guest room into an accessory closet?” The shoe wall was the inspiration that started it. I also have some pieces from my grandparents’ home. They traveled the world and were always ready for the next big adventure. They’re a big inspiration in that way.
WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?
Grey v-neck t-shirt, J.Crew pencil skirt, Ann Taylor necklace and Target shoes.
WHY DO YOU LOVE IT?
It’s a good reflection of my personality with the balance of the relaxed t-shirt and the formal skirt. It’s also a great example of mixing low-end pieces with some mid/high-end pieces. I love these shoes and have gotten more compliments on them. I guess now everybody will know I got them at Target!
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FASHION SPLURGE?
A deep v-neck sequined Alice and Olivia cocktail dress. It’s completely impractical, but it’s so pretty.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT KANSAS CITY?
There’s such a great creative movement going on right now. I love all the local stores and restaurants that are making waves, and that the national media is taking notice. I love that Kansas City has the benefits of a big city ... but never feels like one.
