Green on Blue in Merriam

The iconic blue exterior of IKEA is already gracing the eastern side of I-35 in Merriam, with 359,000 square feet of Swedish “Life Improvement” scheduled to open in the fall. However, it isn’t the paint job that has people talking. It’s the environmentally conscious use of solar panels and geothermal technology. The latter utilizes the earth’s natural heating and cooling through a network of underground pipes and pumps for the building’s ventilation. This and the extensive solar energy array on the roof will reduce the energy IKEA Merriam draws from the power grid, adding to the company’s goal of energy independence by 2020.
