Celebrate National Beer Day - KC Style

There’s more great beer being brewed nearby than ever before, so here are 10 suggestions for breweries, restaurants and events to get you involved in the Kansas City craft beer movement!

#4. Flying Saucer

1)     Free State Brewing Company

This brewery, founded in 1989, was the first legal brewery in the state of Kansas in over 100 years! Free State sticks mostly to classic styles with a few seasonal variations.

2)     Martin City Brewing Company

Come for the in house craft beers and stay for the pizza. Founded by two friends who began as home brewers this brew pub and restaurant has grown by leaps and bounds since it was started in 2011.

3)     KC Beer Fest

#3. KC Beer Fest

This annual beer festival draws many top craft breweries from around the country, as well as thousands of thirsty beer fans. Besides the local luminaries, this event draws top names like Stone, Firestone Walker, Lagunitas, Bell’s and Founders.

4)     Flying Saucer

Even if you’re not a fan of P&L, it’s hard not to love Flying Saucer. The food is very good, but the beer selection is vast and the staff is passionate about educating customers. If you love beer, this place is well worth the trip.

5)     Brewpubs!

Kansas City has several brew pubs scattered across the metro. There’s Barley’s Brewhaus out south and McCoys closer to downtown. And Ruins Pub in the Crossroads with its quirky decor is also a winner.

6)     Tallgrass Brewery

Based in Manhattan, Kan., this small brewery has quickly become famous for putting quality beer in a can. They make a wide range of craft classics, as well as some more innovative offerings. The Buffalo Sweat Oatmeal Cream Stout and Halcyon Wheat are personal favorites.

7)    More Brew Festivals

On April 28 head north to the Parkville Microbrew Festival where besides enjoying your hearty ale you also get to rate it and the Westport Strong Ale Festival in November is not for amateurs. Each beer has an ABV (alcohol by volume) of eight percent or higher.

8)     Beer-Focused Restaurants

There are so many I am sure I will miss a few, but Bier Station, Beer Kitchen, Tapcade, HopCat, No Other Pub and International Brewing House all feature deep selections of craft beer

9)  Beer KC

There's always some beer related event going on here. April 6 is Zipline Brewing Pint Night and on May 27 it's the annual Westport Block Party.

10)  Boulevardia!

This list seemed barren without Boulevard, so why not feature the new street festival planned for June 15 & 16 in the West Bottoms? This festival will include samples of craft beer, local food and live music.
