Kansas City Zoo Plans Stingray and Shark Petting Exhibit

Kansas City Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo plans to install a $1.5 million permanent exhibit that will allow visitors to pet docile cownose stingrays and small bamboo sharks near the current penguin exhibit. Plans call for construction of the exhibit to begin in October, with the attraction opening by May 1, 2018.

The zoo reportedly plans to cover some of the cost of the 20,000- to 30,000-gallon “touch tank” with private donations.

In summer 2002, the zoo had a special petting-stingray exhibit, but more than half were killed by a water quality problem. Zoo officials report that better filtration systems should prevent that problem in the new exhibit.
