   THE DINNER DASH

Your eyes are on the road; you’ve got one hand on the wheel and the other clutching a crispy taco. Yes, taco. So, take that, hamburger and fries, because a taco makes enduring rush hour traffic or driving your kids’ extra-curricular activities carpool downright tasty.

   TikiTaco

In July, this closet-sized shop opened to an enthusiastic response. Maybe it’s the menu, which pops with a tropical island flair: Take the Tommy Fish Taco, for example, with its crispy beer-battered pollock topped with shredded cabbage, queso fresco, pico de gallo and spicy Baja sauce.

There’s a Baja Beach taco with a similar preparation, except the star is beer-battered shrimp. And you’ll have a hard time passing up the Kansas City Burrito, stuffed with curly fries, shredded cheese, guacamole, sour cream and a choice of protein.

Don’t skip the sides, either. The ChupaCOBBra elote is street food-style corn on the cob dressed up with crema and chili powder. The best news? TikiTaco is open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m., so you can get your taco fix pretty much whenever you need it.

   Rico’s Tacos Lupe

Rico’s Tacos Lupe offers up its street tacos for just $1 each on Tuesdays; but you don’t need to wait, they’re affordable no matter what day of the week you land at this Southwest Boulevard stalwart (standard pricing is $1.50 each). Whatever taco filling you prefer — al pastor (crispy-thin shavings of roasted pork), barbacoa (slow-roasted beef), (carnitas (tender braised pulled pork), carne asada (grilled sliced beef), roasted chicken — they do it all here.

The portions are petite but mighty: Meat is piled onto two thin, lightly grilled corn tortillas and topped with the street-standard onion and cilantro. Call ahead with your to-go order or swing through on your way home; either way, you’ll have a hard time making these last all the way to your destination.
