Inside the Closet of Kim Wallace

WHAT DO YOU DO DURING THE DAY?

I work full time at the Kauffman Foundation as a Web and social media analyst. I’ve worked as a magazine editor and advertising copywriter, but my heart has always been in digital publishing and social media. I love connecting with our readers and getting real-time feedback. At night, I work on my lifestyle and natural beauty blog, kimberlyloc.com, where I review green beauty products and share tidbits of my life with the eco- and health-conscious online community.

WHO ARE YOUR FASHION ICONS?

I draw fashion inspiration from cities, weather and architecture. Currently, though, I’m loving the styling of Keri Washington’s character Olivia Pope from “Scandal.” I’ve been incorporating more blush tones, structured outerwear and Prada into my wardrobe thanks to her!

WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP?

When I’m not shopping at my favorite local boutiques like Frankly Basic and Standard Style, I’m constantly scooping up deals on sites like Rue La La, HauteLook and Zappos. I’m obsessed with Everlane, which has the best made-in-America basics, and love perusing Zady for quality, sustainable clothing. I also can’t get enough of the shoe department at Nordstrom Rack and Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth at the Legends.

WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?

You caught me on a day where I was feeling homey. I’m wearing a cotton V-neck from Everlane, a pair of Joe’s Jeans that fit like a glove and my sassy Dolce Vita booties. Yes, I feel at home in heels!  To dress it up a bit more, I added an old patterned scarf, flashy black earrings from Frankly Basic and a beautiful iSanctuary bracelet. The bracelet was made by survivors of human trafficking; iSanctuary provides means for these strong people to be reintegrated as valued, hardworking members of society.

WHY DO YOU LOVE IT?

I love a simple look that can be dressed up with the right shoes and accessories. I also love clothing that’s made or designed in America — it feels good to know you’re doing a little part in keeping crucial apparel jobs in the States. Clothing and accessories with meaning, be it a gift or a story behind who made it, make me feel a little more connected to my style.

HOW HAVE YOU ORGANIZED YOUR CLOSET AND WHAT PERSONAL TOUCHES HAVE YOU INCORPORATED?

My closet’s always been organized by color. There are some days when my mood is bright, cheery and full of energy and other days when I’m craving black, gray and mysterious. I have sections for dresses, tops, skirts, pants, leggings, scarves, tanks and blazers in my walk-in and swear by the slim line hangers that save some space on the rack and keep everything looking uniform.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BEAUTY CLOSET?

As a green beauty blogger, I receive several product samples a week to sample and review. A standard medicine cabinet or under-the-sink storage bin simply will not do! Thanks to the ample storage in my kitchen, I keep a dedicated beauty cabinet filled with masks, makeup and hair/face/body products. I have a soft spot for face masks; I believe everyone should dedicate one day a week to pampering their skin with a good facial. The entire bottom shelf of my beauty cabinet is dedicated to masks!

WHAT 5 BEAUTY PRODUCTS SHOULD EVERY WOMAN HAVE IN HER “BEAUTY CLOSET?"

Manuka honey: This antibacterial, antifungal honey is incredible at treating and preventing breakouts. You can wash your face with it and use it for blending masks that come in a dry powder form.

A pure plant oil (such as coconut, argan or jojoba): Plant oils are so multipurpose. The hardest thing will be figuring out which one to stock! You can use plant oils to deep-condition your hair and moisturize your face and body.

A few go-to masks for your biggest beauty issues:  My favorites are May Lindstrom Skin “The Problem Solver” for waking up dull skin and Yuli “Pure” for acne defense and treatment.

USDA-certified organic lip balm: You lick your lips all day long, eating whatever you’ve applied to them. If you’re already eating organic food, you might as well switch to an organic lip balm! The Eos balms are easy to find and affordable.

Red lipstick: The ultimate red lipstick can make you feel beautiful, sexy and powerful. I love Ilia “Bang Bang.”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT KANSAS CITY?

Kansas City is full of opportunity — you just have to seek it. There are thriving communities for all sorts of interests — arts, yoga, blogging, fashion, food — and people can be so welcoming. I love that I can spend one weekend scouting the best barbecue and beer in town and another weekend exploring vegetarian eateries and juice bars. There really is something for everyone. And if you don’t find it, you can create it thanks to the bustling startup scene and community of movers, shakers, thinkers and doers.
