Inside the Closet of Tonya Manning
A TYPICAL DAY FOR ME
I’m an early riser, so I typically wake up and go for a walk. I usually have time to hang out with my hubby for a bit before I head to the office. I work for 435 Magazine as the audience development manager. I love what I do! My primary focus is circulation. Every day is interesting, different and full of fun surprises. My fashion and retail backgrounds allow me to wear other hats like doing Inside My Closet every month. My evenings are usually spent with my husband Rob, family and friends. We love going to the movies, concerts, sporting events (go Chiefs!), the theater (especially musicals) and having impromptu dance parties all over our house.
WHAT I AM WEARING
I am wearing a peplum top and reversible scarf from Zara, skinny jeans from Express, an obi belt from White House Black Market, booties from Nine West and jewelry from Chico’s and Encore.
I love this look because it’s comfy and easy while still being polished.
• Know yourself and your body and dress accordingly.
I enjoy seeing what’s on trend in fashion. However, I recognize that those looks aren’t all for me. Some of them look goofy on me and some of them just don’t fit my personality. I adore the trend of ladylike dressing but I’m not fond of the high-heeled sneaker craze. I wish I could wear the high-waisted jeans that I’m seeing in fashion magazines, but they don’t work with my body type. When you put something on, you know if it feels right. Trust your instincts.
• Find a good tailor.
Fit is important. The most expensive piece won’t shine if it doesn’t fit properly, and a bargain can be a showstopper if it’s taken in in all the right places.
• Accessories matter.
A carefully chosen scarf, ring, bracelet, earring or necklace can take an
outfit from good to great.
• Have fun!
There are so many things in our lives that are serious. Fashion isn’t one of them.
HOW MY CLOSET IS ORGANIZED
I converted an extra bedroom into my closet space. When we moved into our current house five years ago, I went to the closest hardware store and purchased some closet organizing materials, grabbed my level, stud finder and drill, and went to work.
I was in the retail industry for many years, and that sense of organization and visual importance will never leave me. I can colorize, size and fold anything in my sleep. However, the best things about my closet are the pictures of my family that I’ve sprinkled all over the room. I get to start the day looking at my favorite people in the world.
