What is the latest and most exciting research or technological innovation in your field?
▷As a gynecologic oncologist, I treat ovarian, uterine, cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers exclusively. The methods for treating these cancers have changed dramatically since I began practicing 25 years ago. Today, we are able to treat gynecological cancers with minimally invasive robotic surgery, immunotherapy and personalized, targeted therapies. With advancements in genetics, we are learning more about each individual’s cancer and treating based on the cancer’s genetic makeup. The research happening within molecular pathology will continue to change how we treat cancer, allowing us to be more precise and allowing our patients to live longer, healthier lives.
What is the one piece of medical advice you wish all your patients would follow?
▷I tell all of my patients that living a healthy lifestyle is the first step. We should all exercise daily, eat a balanced diet and stay current on our health screenings. I also encourage everyone under the age of 26 to get the HPV vaccine. It could prevent many of the cancer cases I see in my practice and will be a game changer for the next generation.
What do you like most about your field?
▷Gynecologic oncology is an exciting field of medicine because it is always evolving. I’ve encountered new challenges along the way in my 25 years, but I’ve also seen incredible advancements in how we’re able to diagnose and treat cancer. Our field has changed dramatically even in the last 10 years, so it’s exciting to think about what the future will bring.
What is the hardest thing about being a physician?
▷The hardest days are those when I have to tell one of my patients that there is nothing else we can do for their treatment. We work to transition their focus to quality of life and how we can help the individual and their families through that process. It never gets easier.
