You know those delectable homemade pop-tarts that have been popping up at your favorite coffee shops for the last couple years? You can thank Scott and Kate Meinke, the husband-wife team behind Brookside’s Heirloom Bakery & Hearth, for breathing life into that food trend. Actually, you can thank them for a whole bunch of classic pastries: savory hand-pies, oatmeal cookie cream sandwiches, salted rosemary shortbread, and pistachio apricot scones that will make your morning sing. The list is endless, and the bakery case is always stocked with temptations. This month don’t miss out on their seasonal galettes. I suggest making friends with the pear frangipane. These beauties are gently made by hand and the result is bakery bliss.

Pro tip #1: Check their baking schedule online to see what yummy goodness is coming out of their ovens every day of the week.

Pro tip #2: Show up to a holiday party with an Heirloom cranberry pear crumble or a maple glazed coffee cake and you’ll be an MVG – most valuable guest.

Best bet:  Heirloom’s breakfast sandwich. Go with the cheddar chive biscuit that’s as close to my Southern grandma’s as I can find anywhere. Then top that bad boy off with scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese and prepare to fall in love. If you’re there on the weekends be sure to get a cinnamon roll (or two or three). The combo of pastry drenched in cinnamon sugar is worth getting out of bed for.
