Hillary McCormick & Casey Curran
Ed Fritz

Casey Curran was a three-sport athlete in football, wrestling and baseball. In football, he rushed for 2,043 yards and had six interceptions in his senior season. He was the East Kansas League defensive player of the year. In wrestling, he was the state champion in 170 in his senior year. He also holds the school record for stolen bases in a season and hit .397 his senior year.

Curran went on to play at Washburn University for four years. The defensive back was an honorable mention All-American player.

Hillary McCormick was a multi-year varsity starter in volleyball and basketball. She holds the school record for most blocks in a season in volleyball. In basketball, she holds the record for most points scored in a game at 41 and 454 in a single season, as well as the most rebounds in a game at 30 and 301 in a single season.

McCormick earned All-State status in both sports. She had a scholarship for volleyball at the University of Arkansas. After two years, she transferred to Central Missouri State University. She was starter on the volleyball team, which was ranked eighth in the nation in NCAA Division II volleyball.

The outside hitter received a MIAA Academic Award for posting a 4.0 cumulative GPA. She will graduate in May with a master’s degree in sports management.

Eleven-year Blue Valley Northwest boys basketball coach Ed Fritz won his 500th career victory when the Huskies best De La Salle 57-52 in Minneapolis, Minn., on Jan. 5.

His reaction to winning that 500th game? “I guess I’m getting old,” he says.

Fritz was the head coach at Center High School for 17 years and was an assistant coach on the collegiate level at Baker University and the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

His Huskies have finished second at the Class 6A state tournament for the last two seasons. The veteran coach’s record is 502-288 after the games of Jan. 15.

Six area football players — all seniors — have been named Class 5A All-State picks.

They are: Blue Valley West running back Conley Wilkins and defensive lineman Davis Clark; Blue Valley offensive lineman Clay Rhodes and defensive back Cole Combes; Blue Valley Southwest tight end Anthony Miller; and St. Thomas Aquinas offensive lineman Dan Morin.
