Battling the heat and humidity is certainly the No. 1 challenge this time of year. Probably the quickest solution to combat summer’s sweltering temps is a satisfying dip in the pool or stealing a visit to the lake or beach. But let’s face it; we sometimes break into a cold sweat at the thought of shopping for the swimsuit of our dreams. Don’t put that tube of sunscreen away and run screaming from the sand and surf just yet! There are plenty of swimsuit options to flatter all figures and help you confidently take the plunge.
Suit up and show up at the shore!
Four top tips to score that sizzling swimsuit:
• Know your body type.
• Know how to maximize your best features.
• Know how to minimize the parts of your body that may not match the ship-shape body of your dreams.
• Embrace your body. It’s beautiful … and there is a swimsuit that’s your perfect 10!
Real women do have curves—and too often we let those contours overshadow the svelte figure we imagine for ourselves. Embrace your curves! Today’s swimsuit designers accommodate our unique shapes and sizes with modern fabrics, including stretchy spandex.
A key element to finding swimwear that accentuates the positive is to know your shape: apple, pear, inverted triangle, rectangle and hourglass. Once you have distinguished (and let’s face it, made peace with!) your shape, determine what you want to boost, lift, camouflage, cinch and flatten.
As a wardrobe stylist, clients rely on me to help them find clothes that complement their body’s silhouette. Every woman (and man) I work with has an area of their body they want to minimize. Along with knowing your body type, it’s also important to strike that creative balance between what we want to attract attention to vs. distract from.
Body surf gorgeous
Pear shape: To distract the eye from your hips, play up your narrow waist and chest to draw attention to your body’s upper half. A swimsuit with embellishments on top, such as ruffles, and a dark-colored bottom create balance.
Apple shape: To flatten your belly and visually separate chest and bottom, shop for swimsuits with ruching and tummy control for subtle mid-section concealment. V-neck suits also draw attention up and away from your trouble zone.
One-piece swimsuits: These offer the most support, but if you adore two-piece suits, there are oceans of choices. One of my favorite trends from years ago that has stuck around is the separate. You may not be a size 8 all over, but you can easily find a top and bottom that fit your sun-worshipping figure.
Another unique category of swimwear is for breast cancer survivors. Genae Girard, founder of Beyond the Boobie Trap, has partnered with the Lands’ End design team to offer a terrific selection of high-quality, flattering and feminine swimwear that suits women’s various post-cancer experiences.
With this year’s sea of swimwear fashions, get more than just your feet wet and unveil yourself in style. Enjoy soaking in the summer’s rays while looking and feeling your dynamite best!!
