The Wild Way

The Wild Way Coffee is smack-dab in the middle of two slightly contradictory industries: the food truck world, which is mobile and flexible, and the coffee shop world, which is all about consistency and regulars. It’s to their credit that Wild Way co-founders John and Christine Clutton have creatively married those two disparate realms.

The Wild Way’s entire coffee operation is contained in a custom-built 91-square-foot trailer (thewildwaycoffee.com). It’s enough space for two or three baristas to fit comfortably with all the necessities for making elaborate craft coffee beverages. In the winter, you’ll love indulging in the salted trail mix latte featuring tahini, sea salt, maple, espresso and steamed milk. In the spring, get the Novel, made with passion fruit caramel (provided by Jessica Armstrong, pastry chef and co-owner of the Crossroads’ Novel restaurant), espresso and milk, shaken with ice, and strained into a glass rimmed with caramel and coconut flakes.

It’s not just the Insta-worthy drinks that draw crowds, though. The Cluttons have cultivated a loyal following thanks to the uninhibited joy they imbue into their service whether they’re at Overland Park Farmers Market or their warehouse space in the East Crossroads.

“I think this business is working for us because it was our dream, and when something is your dream, you just give it your all,” Christine Cluttons says. “We’ve been in business for a year now, and we’ve had to learn, adapt and improvise.”

Is there a brick-and-mortar shop in store for The Wild Way? Eh, Christine says, maybe someday. Until then, check the website (or Instagram) for hours and locations.
